Strategies for your stats

I’ve had this question put to me a few times this week.

What should I train? Should I keep my stats balanced?

And it’s not an easy question to answer. So here is my generic advice to you, the reader.

  1. First decide on what kind of player you are going to be
  2. Then decide on how many of the advantages you want to use
  3. Use the right training strategies to achieve the best stat balance for your goal (1) using everything you can to get there (2)

(1) In terms of stats there is only one question I need to ask to work you out. Are you going to attack a lot of players?

If you are going to attack a lot then I suggest you go for stats which will help you win. Strength and Speed – these are the most important when you attack. If you can’t hit your opponent, or do damage if you do, then all you will get is a loss or a stalemate.

But what if your opponent has speed/strength too? REMEMBER you are in control when attacking. You decide which temps you use, how long the attack takes and which weapons you use. The defender has to of pre-selected his temp, has no/little control as to which weapon they use, and you can wait for their temp effects to wear off. If you have no def you can use smoke grenades, flash grenades or similar to negate your opponents attacking stats.

If you are going to defend only though, and not worry about attacks, then it’s less important which stats you train. Your game goals are less likely to be stats in any case, and losing battles will mean very little to you.

(2) This brings us to training methods. If stats are really your ultimate goal you should already have a fair idea of these. And it’s something I go on about in other posts like ‘The benefits of faction hopping’. But I will repeat it here: If you want to be the best you must use every advantage you can.

Drugs: Ensure you use the right drug for the stat you are training. Basically low stats (under 100k) you should use Ecstasy. Higher stats use LSD or Xanax. If you have taken less than 50 Xanax you still have the “drug free” training option – Read more in Vladar’s training gain guide

Job: The job you do can massively impact stat gains. I would change jobs whenever you switch which stat you are training:

Strength – Fitness Center
Defense – Ladies Strip Club
Dexterity – Gents Strip Club
Speed – Fitness Center

Of course the Farm or Pub are alternatives if you have merits in crimes, or chaining requirements.

Gyms: Refer to Vladar’s guide as linked above – each Gym has a rating for each stat gain. Choose the right gym for the stat you want, or choose the stat which your best gym offers the best gains on. You can also ask here if how does 24 hour fitness have showers.

Proper pro’s can use the “Hank ratio” to unlock 3 special gyms. Special gyms have great gains but for only 1/2 stats, and usually you can only have two special gyms at once. But with a clever ratio of stats you can have 3 gyms open – read the pdf guide here – Just remember this limits you to a single stat distribution strategy (but has the best gains)

Faction: Choose a faction with high Steadfast specials in the stat you are training, or train the one your faction has high specials in

Sneakers/MCS: For super rich folk you can spend 14b to get a 5% gain in speed. The MCS benefit block gives you random 300 energy boosts.

Cans/FHC: Boosters can massively help with training gains, if you are rich. Some factions have booster specials which mean Cans are almost the same energy gains as FHC, but much cheaper per day. You can mix cans with the restaurant job to take this advantage even further

Books: The books which subscribers (and lucky mission doers) a big advantage can also be used to boost stats – just make sure you are fully prepared before you use any book. eg. Don’t use the consumable book unless you can afford 31 days worth of an awesome consumable!

Happy: Having a great property and rehabbing to ensure your happy stays high can improve your stat gains as well.

(3) Now you know the advantages choose the ones that fit your goals. If you are young and have low stats (under 50m each) then I can only suggest something if you want to attack a lot:

Use hanks ratio, while in a fitness center, and keep your stats in this ratio:

Dexterity ~37%
Speed ~28%
Strength ~28%
Defense ~7%

To get Dext to 37% you may want to use the Gents strip club first.

For all others.. do as you wish – for defenders it makes little difference, for those who can’t follow the ratio (stat distribution is too broken already) then all I can say is choose the best mix of job/faction/etc to get the most out of your energy.

Why do I say it makes little difference? Well it’s just a complex version of Scissors/Paper/Rock if you “whore” one stat or just train 2.
If you keep them all the same then those who don’t gain faster than you, so the number of people you beat is going to shrink as time goes on.

Chaining tips for all levels

Given War 2.0 is coming this may only be useful for a small amount of time (Ched time, as we know, can last a while though!)

The very best chainers of all time have never had the best stats. They haven’t had time to waste lurking for retals. They have never even been the person with the most hits for their faction. The best chainers are the ones who win 100% of their fights, don’t stay above 150e for a long time, and don’t complain when they lose a war.

Why are they the best chainers? They are effective. They are the core of any faction war effort. But how can you be one of these unsung heroes?

Stack Energy and bide your time

Stacking energy is an important step – it allows you to bank a possible 50 attacks in a short time frame. Yes, a two player team could in theory do a 100 chain!

How do you stack? Take Xanax, but don’t use the energy, take another xanax.. until you have 1000e.

As well as Xanax you can also use energy drinks. If you can afford this it is recommended you only use cans when you are in 12 hours of the war time. This avoid overdoses and if you only use 6 cans you can ensure your booster cooldown is at zero for the start of the war. It also means you are not under the effects of xanax for the kick off.

Another tip is to get to 150e using points refill before you start stacking – this minimises the ‘energy loss’ of not gaining energy every 10 minutes.

Research your targets

There is nothing worse than hitting start on your attack only to find your enemy dodges every attack and crits you ever turn. Ensure you know who in your warbase is just too much for you. Every attack you make can be seen as potential income, and 25e ~ 1mil. The same as a stat spy. Get someone to spy your main war targets, it’s cheaper than losing to them!

Stay in hospital

Remember war is a two horse race. You vs Them. The winner is the fastest chainers, specifically the team who can hit the most bonuses on the opponent as quick as possible. The easiest way to slow your opponent is to reduce the number of targets they have. Wait for full life, Wait for any retal timer to lapse. Then you can med out and smack em down again.

Tabs are king

When I am preparing to chain I ensure I am in hospital to start with (self hosp using RR, wrong blood bags, get someone to bounty, etc). Then I have all the time in the world to find my targets.

Now I am safe I head to the warbase

2015-06-01_10-27-18

With most modern browsers (and on windows, but I’m sure you can do the same on linux or mac) you can hold the CTRL key and click links to open them in new tabs. So for all of your potential targets use this to open up links to their attack pages. I start by having tab 1 as war base, and tab 2 as items (you can press CTRL+1, or CTRL+2 to quickly go to these tabs), then my targets.

I then do 3-5 in a row, starting with the ones I know will be tougher, then open an item tab so in the middle of it I may use meds again, and then do 3-5 more. If you are a proper pro you will have a tab for each potential target for all your energy. You may even want to open up a points refill tab after your 40th target, then 6 more targets. I like to open up a tab to the war base if I know my 17th hit will be a bonus hit as well, so I can ensure its on the right faction. Bonus hits are super important so best to ask a faction mate to tell you in chat if you are approaching a big one!

At this point you tell your faction to get out of the way as well. Head to the item screen in tab 2, or get a revive, and med out and use as many as possible to get to full health. It’s then a matter of pressing CTRL+TAB to get to your next target, then CTRL+R to reload the page (as initially it will be a ‘you can do this, your in hospital)

2015-06-01_10-27-27

It will refresh, you press start, you beat that sucker down, and then CTRL+TAB, CTRL+R again. I like to close tabs once I have the ‘you hospitalized xxx’ message, makes it easier to know where I am.

If you are good you can do all your hits in a matter of minutes. I like to then use a wrong blood bag to put myself back in hospital so I can’t be retalled.

Staying alive…

Now with the latest attacking update life has become a major issue. This means attacking non stop is not going to last long without meds or very wise target choices. For the rich there are three ways of avoiding the med cooldown bar filling up too quick:

1. Lose an attack and get revived.. not great as you only get 20% life back
2. Use temp items like pepper spray, flash grenades or smoke grenades to stop your opponent hitting you.. doesn’t always hit, but can slow the life loss down
3. Use pharmacy booster Seratonin. These cost 1.3m each but they do two things.. They give you more life AND they boost your def stat for 120 seconds. So you don’t even need to use one each battle.

before use:

after use: life back at max, 120 seconds of Seratonin shown, def beefed!

War timing

If you are the leader of a faction you can choose when to start your wars. I prefer 8am TC Time, this allows those with stacked energy to use it all, and that days points refill, then get another points refill after the reset (midnight TC time). For those rich enough to use FHC as well that is a whopping 76 hits for a single player.

Any more?

There are always more little tricks I’ve not come across, so feel free to leave a comment below with your own. Happy chaining!

Which stats should I train?

Wowzers, what a fantastic question. I have seen at least 4 incarnations of the attack system on torn, and never have I ever had the stat ratio I think was most appropriate at that time.  I’ve also seen plenty of people weigh in on the subject and I always get utterly bored reading about it.

Why?

Well to be honest the reason is obvious – no one cares.

For those with huge stats there are only a small number of players you will beat or lose to based on your strategy.

For those with mid stats there are so many players you can still beat to mug, leave for exp or chain that you would be insane to think the number of players your ultimate strat is going to put you above means anything useful to you.

How do you win attacks?

The main advantage you will have against another right now is actually armour. Armour provides a huge differential in stats, and given the attacking player already has an advantage with increased damage you are a sure winning if you double that advantage with your defensive capability.

I use seratonin to gain extra HP and increase my defence ability. Expensive sure, if you can’t afford it go for pepper spray or flash bangs, they are equally effective against all players.

Pick your target well – if you don’t know there stats compare your stats, xanax and point refills, defends ratio, and you will get a good idea of whether or not you will win.

Don’t waste your E attacking someone you don’t know anything about. If they don’t have money to mug, weak stats for that level, or known stats.. don’t bother.

Stat caps and strategy

Stat gains increase as you increase your stats, up to when you reach ~50m of a stat. So make the most of it. Get each stat to 50m as soon as possible. And preferably do it in the order of your bonuses in training as gained from the sports science courses. If you are sure you want to be all about stats they are a must, as is using Xanax.

From there you again rely on your biggest bonuses for stat increases to guide you. More stats is better. If you can afford it you should also then be using Cans of Taurine or FHC (super rich only). Once you hit 1b in a stat you can look at using SEs as well.. but to be honest that is a lot of money to use on stats, you would want to be using all your energy on mugs or be backed by a huge amount of money in stocks or trading to be able to do that (I don’t even do that!) – or have a wicked gambling strategy 🙂
